Team of the Month: Varsity Boys Basketball
by Ashley Zhang ‘28
Standing on a solid record of 11 wins and 4 losses, Varsity Boys Basketball has demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience, earning Team of the Month. The team has built its success by pairing consistent performance on the court with relentless work off the court.
The season kicked off with an overwhelming win over St. Luke's (63-39), BB&N (65-49), and Concord Academy (75-53). After losing narrowly to St. Andrew's and Millbrook, Boys Basketball quickly adjusted and responded with an impressive seven-win streak. The team dominated the court, winning by over 30 points against Kents Hill (78-48) and Pomfret (82-48).
After falling behind by 10 points in the second half, the team showed resilience and, fueled by the crowd’s cheers, mounted a strong comeback to secure the win. “The gym felt like it was about to explode from all the students and teachers cheering for us,” Captain Alex Echevarria ‘26 said, “it was the loudest I’ve ever seen MFAC.”
Coach Justin Perron credits the team’s success to their outstanding talents and the strong connections they have built as a team.
“Our returning players have all been great examples of hard work and dedication, and with the injection of new talent, it gives us a roster that can compete with a lot of teams in New England,” he said. “On the court, our biggest strength has been in times we are playing for instead of with each other. Off the court, the team’s camaraderie shines. This group seems to genuinely enjoy each other’s presence.”
The commitment this team dedicates to the game outside of practice is often overlooked. Echevarria describes the team culture as “having high standards and expectations”, he says, “people take the initiative to put in extra shots, lift, and watching film on their own. This shows how dedicated our team is to improving.”
With two-thirds of the season in the book and plenty still ahead, the team is working strong towards it’s goal of “being in the top tier of the ISL and hosting a home playoff game.” Don’t miss their next home game against Belmont Hill on February 4.
