Spring 2026 Student-led Musical: Hadestown

by Charlotte Han ‘27

In early May, St. Mark’s students presented Hadestown, a student-led musical production that brought together live music, storytelling, and stage performance. Through a combination of vocals, acting, and movement, the cast and crew worked collaboratively to transform the school stage into a dynamic retelling of a classic myth.

Hadestown, based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, traces the love story of a young couple. Orpheus, a musician, falls in love with Eurydice, but when she is drawn into the underworld, he sets out to bring her back. Guided by Hermes, Orpheus travels to the realm ruled by Hades, where Eurydice is trapped. He attempts to convince Hades to release her, eventually earning a chance to lead her back to the surface under one condition: he must not look back at her until they have fully returned. At the last moment, overcome by doubt, Orpheus turns around, and Eurydice is lost to the underworld once again. The story emphasizes enduring themes of trust, love, and uncertainty, highlighting the fragility of hope in the face of fear.

The production highlighted many strong student performances, with leading roles by Fiji Chen ’28 (Orpheus), MJ Fisher ’26 (Eurydice), Seoyeon Kim ’26 (Hermes), Si Ah Jang ’27 (Persephone), and Michael Cai ’27 (Hades). Each performer brought a distinct presence to the stage, contributing to the emotional depth of the story. Additionally, the ensemble’s harmonies were well-balanced and expressive, creating a cohesive performance that enhanced the overall narrative. Their coordinated energy added to the atmosphere, making the production both engaging and memorable for the audience.

Last but not least, congratulations to all of the directors, cast, and crew for their dedication and effort in presenting an unforgettable show for St. Mark’s students and families.
