Editor’s Letters

Catherine Zhang, Anouk Shin, and Lucas Jiang reflect on their time at The St. Marker and thank the newspaper team.

Catherine Zhang

How time flies, I can’t believe it is my turn to write those words. I have constantly joked with my friends that in my St. Mark’s memorabilia collection, every single printed issue of The St. Marker during my time will have its own folder. That is how much The St. Marker meant to me.

I am extremely grateful to our wonderful editorial team, to the seniors whom I looked up to as Editors-in-Chief before, and to Dr. Harwood and Ms. Plimpton for their continuous guidance and support. Anouk and Lucas, my fellow EICs who shared the same ambitious vision as I did, everything we have achieved this year would not have happened without you guys.

From a writer, vlogger, and interviewer to an editor and eventually Editor-in-Chief, this platform has taught me valuable lessons: I learned how to have a sharp vision, how to tell a story, and how to discover what is beneath the surface. It was a great honor to be part of this team, alongside many peers who are passionate about amplifying voices and making stories heard.

I am confident that our new editorial team will continue the amazing work next year, and I cannot wait to see what they can accomplish. I wish all of them the best of luck!

I cannot believe my last St. Marker Issue is already here! It seems just yesterday that I was a staff writer on a newly resurrected St. Marker. Our newspaper has come a long way since then, and there are so many people to thank for this.

Thank you to Catherine and Lucas for leading meetings with me, figuring out logistics, and manifesting ideas. We said to ourselves that every issue would be in print, and we made it happen. Thank you to Dr. Harwood and Ms. Plimpton for always being there to guide us. Thank you to everyone on the editorial team, layout team, and every staff writer for making issues possible.

I am so lucky to have worked with all of you. I can’t wait to see what next year has to offer.

Lucas Jiang

I still remember my first time writing for the St. Marker. My article was about chapel attendance, and I spent days interviewing teachers and students, trying to understand their perspectives. At the time, I did not realize that this nuanced survey would become my favorite part of the St. Marker: asking questions, listening carefully, and discovering that every article is more complicated, more human, and more interesting than it first appeared.

I am incredibly grateful to Catherine and Anouk, my fellow Editors-in-Chief, for sharing this year’s vision and making every issue possible. I also want to thank Dr. Harwood and Ms. Plimpton for their constant guidance, encouragement, and trust. Additionally, I worked very closely this year with Serena Lin and Dingyi Ling, whose diligence and attention to detail have astounded me every step of the way.

I am certain that the next editorial team will carry on our work and create thoughtful issues that represent our community. It has been my honor to work with all of you.
