Team of the Spring: Boys Varsity Baseball
by Jaewon Lee ‘29 and Dwight Lin ‘28
This spring, one team at St. Mark’s is swinging harder than the rest: varsity baseball. Standing at a record of 12 wins and 4 losses during the regular season, the best record in the 21st century, the varsity baseball team has proven its excellence on the diamond, emerging as one of the most compelling stories on campus this season.
Starting its season in Florida, the varsity baseball team has put in a consistent effort since then. With its first regular-season game against Winchendon being cancelled, the St. Mark’s Lions started its season with a 3-game winning streak. They fought hard against the Mount St. Charles baseball team and won with a score of 2-1. The varsity baseball team then went on to win two straight games against Brooks School and Milton Academy, with scores of 16-0 and 8-2, respectively. These early wins have set the tone for what has been a dominant and disciplined campaign. As the season progressed, the Lions have managed to secure some signature wins, but for Captain Cameron Aguilar ’27, picking just one standout is nearly impossible.
“I can not even pick a single game or moment that's the most memorable. We have had so many exciting and competitive games where we have been able to pull through and win. Being able to play in highly intense and important games, including our win against Nobles and a walk-off win against Roxbury Latin, are definitely some of the most memorable moments”, Cameron Aguilar ’27 noted.
This remarkable regular-season run is a reflection of the player’s dedication to the sport: their unseen hard work behind the scenes, the tedious hours in the gym and the cage, practicing one motion repetitively.
Many qualities can make a sports team successful, but for the St. Mark’s varsity baseball team, discipline has been the driving force behind their strong season record. This discipline is perhaps best showcased through the team’s remarkable pattern of resilience: After every loss, the varsity baseball team has bounced back with a win, demonstrating true grit. During practices, teammates get productive work done, but also have fun doing it. The players truly appreciate each other's presence, and on game day, which the team looks forward to all week, is merely a stage to showcase the team bonds and the behind-the-scenes work that they have put in.
At the start of the season, the varsity baseball team has set its sights on an arduous, yet attainable goal: to win the ISL championship. With each win and lesson from losses, the varsity baseball team is inching closer to achieving its goal. As the Lions secured the second seed in the ISL playoff, they are hosting the first ISL playoff game in history. The chance to bring home the trophy is within reach, and this group of Lions isn’t taking it for granted. With the concurrent performance, accomplished through the small but impactful efforts, discipline, and leadership, the title is well within their grasp. On track towards the championship, be sure to come out and support the varsity baseball team, because this is a run worth remembering.
